EURO CRIME MAGAZINE Review of Hammerhead.
Ken McCoy writes in a very gripping style and the pages of this fairly long book just zoom by. It is so entertaining you just don't want it to end, but end it must and it does so in a classic resolution that kept me guessing.
While Harry Henshawe is having his head blown off in his bookie’s shop, his wife at home is having hers battered in. These are vicious and unecessary murders whose perpetrators seriously need taking off the streets. Sam Carew was a rookie police constable at the time. He chased and caught known villain Kevin Kilpatrick who was cycling away from the murdered bookie’s shop. The story is set in the unlovely West Yorkshire town of Unsworth. According to local comedians Unsworth isn’t twinned with anyone it has a suicide pact with Grimsby. It’s a fitting background for this book.
We move on nine years to where Sam is now an ex-detective sergeant having been kicked off the West Yorkshire Police for a revenge prank played on DI Bowman. In fairness, the detective inspector fully deserved this, but it was a foolish prank nevertheless and it cost Sam his job. His main income now comes from his building firm which he inherited from his late father but his main interest is investigating crimes he feels police might have got wrong. This is very much frowned upon by the police who do their best to obstruct his investigations. His previous escapades have put him into mortal danger more than once, to the extent that he’s a regular customer at Unsworth Hospital’s A&E Department.
However, he’s now safe and bored so, when a beautiful woman asks for his help, he can’t help but be intrigued, especially when it turns out that she is none other than Kevin Kilpatrick’s daughter. Nine years ago Sam had his suspicions about Kilpatrick’s guilt but Kevin’s surprise confession sealed his fate. He was banged up and the case was closed. Nine years into two successive life sentences Kevin is still keeping schtum about what really happened. His daughter, the delectable Alison, is certain of her father’s innocence. She tells Sam her dad held his hands up to the crimes to save her from threatened revenge disfigurement by the dangerous and vicious gang who actually committed the murders. Using every womanly wile she persuades Sam to investigate, and Sam Carew is nothing if not susceptible to a woman’s wiles.
A recent spate of murders using a similar method to that used on one of Kilpatrick’s supposed victims convinces Sam that Alison may have a point. However, he doesn’t bargain on getting mixed up with one of the most ruthless and dangerous families in the country. A family headed by, would you believe, a woman who has turned her late husband’s failing criminal organisation into a successful criminal empire dealing in drugs, theft, murder, extortion and contract killing. This last one being the crime Sam ends up investigating.
Sam has friends who assist him in his crime fighting There’s Welsh copper, DC Owen Price who keeps him up to speed with the goings-on in Unsworth police station; Sally Grover, his on/off fiancée and secretary; and several of his building workers. All of the above have good reason to worry about getting mixed up in Sam’s crime-fighting but such is his charm and persuasive powers that they find themselves involved whether they like it or not. Thus the story begins…
