I've said it before with Keri's writing, but the way she weaves a hypnotic tale is straight out of a movie. She sets the scene, dirty, grimy, and takes these anti-heroes she's created and pushes them to the limit. As the reader, you're just along for the ride. And what a twisty, turning ride it is. Every time a new character gets introduced, you're immediately suspicious. Who's this? Is he/she crooked? I'm not sure they're trust worthy....watch your back Jase & Lucy! Ahh! The thrill of it is an emotional, adrenalin junkie high that's seldom achieved by reading, but Keri does it every time. There are twists and turns in this story that sucker punch you. Jase goes through so much emotional turmoil on his quest for vengeance, it left me ragged. This book is not for the faint of heart.
Jase and Lucy are an explosion. They've known each other for a long time & their chemistry is off the charts insane. In and out of each other's lives, their coupling almost seems like fate. Destiny. Bound in blood.
"I hated that she saw beneath the mask, beneath the bones and flesh, and yanked at my soul like a beam of sunlight fighting its way through murky waters of a swamp."
Through the blood, carnage, gunfire and death, Keri Lake reveals certain truths. Lives are intertwined. There are certain people who are pushed to the brink, but bounce back. People will fight, to the end, no matter what it takes. Vengeance can be beautiful. Fate does exist. And most importantly, love can triumph.
Fate...it's an amazing and twisted thing.
Likewise, this book....
Every once in a while, there comes along that book, you know the one, it's starts a bit slow and you have your doubts and then...what the !? Yes, I confess, I'm sitting here staring at this screen, trying to string words together that will in some way do justice to the brilliance of the message in this book. Fate. For Jase and Lucia, theirs were destined to include the other, there can be no doubt.
Throughout the course of this story, my heart hurt, broke, got glued back together and exploded (the good and the bad way). My hands shook, with anger and frustration and fear. My mind's eye saw, things inflicted...no human or animal should ever be subjected to. To say this book elicited feels would be a gross understatement, these characters were love and hate, strength and weakness, dark and light, determination and hopelessness...and if this....if this, is not what a good book is supposed to do, make you think and feel, then I want to keep doing Keri Lake's brand of wrong for as long as she wants to keep doing it.
Wow, what an emotional roller coaster! Keri Lake is simply amazing. She weaves an incredibly intricate and complicated plot. She takes Chekhov's gun principle to a whole new level. Absolutely everything she introduces turns out to be important and linked to other aspects of the book in unexpected ways. She keeps you guessing. I thought I knew who the bad guy was from early on and turns out I was only sort of correct. Lake is the mistress of smoke and mirrors.
If you love a heavy dose of action, suspense, and unflinching violence with your romance, then you are going to love this book! I cannot wait for Ballistic! I am so glad I discovered Lake!!
4.5-5 stars. Jase Hawkins has lost everything of value to him. Hardened and fueled by pain with single minded determination for retribution, he is released from his sentence so he can hunt down those who are responsible for hurting the ones he loved. He doesn't have anymore to lose, until he encounters Lucia Novakova.
This story is rife with a combination of elements - darkness, grittiness, soulless villains, horrible acts of violence, double crossing schemes, tragedy and sacrifice. I loved both Jase and Lucy. They are each strong characters who have their guards up. Jase has an innate sense of protectiveness and will jump into the fire to do what's right although he hardly sees himself as a knight. He's struggled his way through life and everything is hard-earned that he doesn't have room for complications or distractions until he eliminates the enemy that he was hired to go after. As for Lucy, she can be snarky and feisty, but also crafty and has some unique skills that come in handy whenever she's in a bind.
Lucy was in the wrong place at the wrong time, leading to a cascade of events that coincidentally sends her into Jase's lap, literally. Her life is in grave danger and by taking her chances, she could be safer with Jase than anyone else. This book weaved a great plot of suspense and twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. The way the story starts out, the stage has already been set for the players and the reader is sitting alongside both Jase and Lucy as they uncover revelations from the past about who's behind what and where to find answers that dig a path deeper and deeper into a web of lies and depravity.
I really loved the writing and enjoyed all of the different aspects explored. The story had many heart thumping moments of anticipation as well as dread for what would happen next, yet I was completely invested and had to keep reading. Amidst all of the action, there was also a softer undertone when it came to Jase and Lucy's developing relationship. Still, this has several portions that can be hard to read for some because of how profoundly unjust circumstances can be. I am really blown away by this series and am looking forward to the next book.
